Mixed (Up) Media
Inked Fish (Gyotaku), Acrylics, Collage and Aloha
Pete brushes fish—real ones—with ink or acrylic, then makes a print by laying rice paper or mulberry paper over the fish and rubbing to transfer the image. He then glues the monoprint onto canvas and uses acrylics, modeling paste, Hawaiian fabric and other materials to create his unique Aloha Fish. He also creates tropical “sketches,” using cut outs and scraps from vintage Hawaiian shirts and other materials.
Pete Chandler sells his work at juried art shows up and down the East Coast and in numerous gallery shops and specialty stores. He resides in Portland, Maine and Alexandria, Virginia. You can find him many weekends at Washington, D.C.’s historic Eastern Market.
He holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Johns Hopkins University.
